Chapter Seven
The four of us stood in a ragged line in front of Parkerâs desk, very like a gang of naughty schoolgirls brought up before the headmaster, except in one crucial respect. Parker had no real authority over any of us. Stacey at least was stood more or less to attention, although her arms were folded across her chest, while Wendy looked sulky and defiant. Juliette was looking out of the window. Our attitude clearly annoyed him, and as he told us off Iâd been wondering if, given the opportunity, heâd have liked to line us up with our bottoms bare for six-of-the-best apiece. He continued the harangue heâd started as soon as we walked into his office.
â⦠a serious offence, in direct contradiction of the statement of conduct you signed when I agreed to accept you on this course. Despite my clear instructions to the contrary you brought alcohol into the camp â¦â
Juliette interrupted.
âNo. We brought a bottle of wine into the camp. Wine contains alcohol, but it is not alcohol. Please at least try and get your facts right.â
She sounded serious, but I knew she was simply annoying him on purpose. It worked too, his face turning a couple of shades darker than it had already been before he went on.
âAlcohol, which is forbidden, and it is forbidden for the very good reason that it has a deleterious effect on concentration and performance â¦â
I couldnât help but point something out.
âYou drink. You were having a pint of beer that night at The Plough.â
It took him only a moment to rally himself.
âThat is irrelevant. Besides, what is more important is that you deliberately disobeyed the camp rules, my rules. Itâs hardly the first time either, especially you two, Girls O and E, while you, Girl A, have a serious attitude problem.â
Juliette spoke up again.
âBlah, blah, blah. We know what you think of us, Mr Parker, and I for one couldnât give a damn. So either kick us out, and we can deal with the rest of this through our company solicitors, or letâs get on with it, shall we?â
For a moment I thought he was going to explode, but he managed to get himself under control and carried on, in a particularly nasty voice.
âNo, Girl A, I am not going to kick you out, but this incident is going on your report, along with every other detail of your disruptive behaviour.â
Juliette merely shrugged, but I was conscious of a sinking feeling and couldnât help imagining Mr Scottâs reaction when he read what Parker had to say. I was going to have a lot of explaining to do, although I wasnât prepared to accept that weâd done anything wrong. Stacey and Wendy didnât look particularly happy either, but there was nothing to be done. Parker continued, now rather calmer.
âIt would be a shame to kick you out anyway, as that would deprive me of the chance to really bring home to you how little potential you have in comparison to the serious candidates on this course.
